The KV-1 with its 76mm gun was one of the Red Army’s most powerful tanks when Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941. Named after Soviet defense commissar Kliment Voroshilov, the KV-1 shocked German forces with its thick armor, which proved nearly impervious to most early-war German anti-tank weapons. Though heavy and somewhat slow, it could deal out serious firepower with its 76mm gun and was often used to break through enemy defenses or halt advancing panzers. The KV-1 helped buy critical time for the Soviet Union to reorganize and develop the next generation of tanks, including the famous T-34.
