Though not as prominently featured as in some other armies, sniper teams in the Regio Esercito were employed for reconnaissance and long-range engagement of enemy personnel. Using scoped variants of the Carcano rifle, Italian snipers were trained to target officers, machine gunners, and other high-value threats to reduce enemy effectiveness.
