The Black Shirts, or Camicie Nere, were originally formed as a political militia in Fascist Italy but evolved into a fighting force known as the MVSN (Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale). During World War II, many of these units were deployed alongside the regular Italian army, serving in various theatres including North Africa, the Balkans, and the Eastern Front. LMG teams were vital for providing suppressive fire and supporting riflemen during assaults or defensive actions, often using weapons like the Breda 30. Despite their irregular origins, Black Shirt units played a notable role in Italy’s wartime military efforts.
